Toward Self-replicating Robots

چکیده
In this paper we describe several prototypes of self-replicating robotic systems that have been developed at JHU. In contrast to self-reconfiguration, selfreplication is the process of assembling a functional robot from passive components. The robot that is assembled (the replica) is an exact copy of the robot doing the assembling. Our presentation marks the beginning of the JHU effort in this area. The future impact of self-replicating systems is potentially enormous. In particular, the cultivation of material and energy resources in outer space using facilities built by self-replicating systems is an attractive application area worth serious consideration.

Robotic Self-replication in Structured and Adaptable Environments
Since the first theoretical work on self-replicating machines was performed by John Von Neumann [1], his ideas have been applied in many research areas such as cellular automata, nanotechnology, macromolecular chemistry and computer viruses [2]. Penrose, in [3], presented simple units with certain properties able to self-replicate. Although his work could not make the further step toward self-r...
متن کاملA semi-autonomous replicating robotic system
The concept of self-replicating machines was introduced more than fifty years ago by John von Neumann. However, a fully autonomous self-replicating robot has yet to be implemented. This paper discusses our ongoing research on self-replicating robots. Here we describe a semiautonomous prototype that can demonstrate replication under human supervision. This work builds on our previous results in ...
متن کاملA Minimalist Parts Manipulation System for a Self-replicating Electromechanical Circuit
In this paper, we describe a fully autonomous, selfreplicating, electromechanical circuit, and the minimalist manipulation system that the circuit uses as a substrate in order to function. In the context of a class project at JHU, we designed and built a prototype system consisting of basic electronic components and motors which had the ability to build a replica of its own control circuit. Thi...
متن کاملToward Growing Robots: A Historical Evolution from Cellular to Plant-Inspired Robotics
This paper provides the very first definition of “growing robots”: a category of robots that imitates biological growth by the incremental addition of material. Although this nomenclature is quite new, the concept of morphological evolution, which is behind growth, has been extensively addressed in engineering and robotics. In fact, the idea of reproducing processes that belong to living system...
متن کاملConcepts for 3D Printing-Based Self-Replicating Robot Command and Coordination Techniques
Self-replicating robots represent a new area for prospective advancement in robotics. A self-replicating robot can identify when additional robots are needed to solve a problem or meet user needs, and create them in response to this identified need. This allows robotic systems to respond to changing (or non-predicted) mission needs. Being able to modify the physical system component provides an...
